Saturday, August 21 - Lunch. The Last Post.

Thanks to everyone who followed along. Thanks to the 2010 kitchen crew: Stephanie, Cynthia, Kim, Len, Marcin, Alp, Robert, Joseph and Lucca. A special thanks to Marianne for taking all the good pictures; I took the lousy ones. I encourage you to recheck the blog around February or March. I'm sure that by then you'll really need a pick-me-up to get through the winter before Billings 2011. See you next year.

Tuesday, August 17 - Dinner

Country Fair 2010 came to a close with the "Booths" portion of the event. This year we decided to have dinner at the same time and the result was awesome. The kids could play ladder golf and bob for apples, and then they could enjoy the best cook out Camp Billings has ever had:
Grilled corn
Hamburgers
Blue cheese
Swiss cheese

Cheddar cheese
Sauteed onions
Bacon
Lettuce and tomato

Foot long hot dogs
Sauerkraut
Chopped onions
Hot pepper relish
Sweet relish
Ketchup
Mustard
6 flavors of chips
Potato salad
Baked beans
Pie bar for dessert

This counselor was not alone in having at least one of each.

I (Marianne) was sitting at the staff table when they came out, and we were barely able to stand it... It was amazing.

The condenser on the 15-year old walk-in finally died. It required some tricky-Ricking, but within 12 hours the replacement part was acquired, a rental refrigerator truck was up and running, and all food was saved. Special thanks to Camp Farnsworth for taking some of our food at 11:00 pm last night.

Needless to say, blogging is on the back burner. Get ready for some Country Fair madness in the next few days.

Tuesday, August - Dinner

Baked ziti
Salad
This photo was taken on the back table in the kitchen where we eat. Alp doesn't eat pork so he got the small bowl of vegetarian ziti. The Chex Mix is for the staff after taps. The walkie-talkie is in the bowl of rice because it fell in the lake.

Scrambled eggs
English muffins - a quick note on the historic importance of these particular muffins. Using a revolutionary technique we managed to serve every single person a HOT English muffin. One counselor, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said "The butter actually melted on the muffin."

Sunday, August 8 - Dinner

A quick moment of contemplation and reflection. Tonight we served mac and cheese for the last time this summer. It is certainly bittersweet: on one hand there will be no more shredding of so much cheese that the robotcoupe dies, on the other hand it marks the beginning of the end. So, we pause to honor the mac and cheese, but only briefly because we've got to get ready for breakfast

Tuesday, August 3 - Dinner

Today's dinner was the synthesis of two random ideas. The first is "Billings' second annual pick a meal contest" in which kids submit menu ideas for meals we've never had before; I choose a winner based on what makes the most sense, budget constraints, etc. The second idea highlights the exceptional food that Vermont produces. Below is the menu with a few of the folks who helped produce our dinner: Shepherds Pie submitted by Isabelle from Cabin 1.

Shepherds pie - Corn, potatoes and onions from Crossroad Farm, Thetford. Beef from VT Highland Beef, Orleans.
Salad - Lettuce and tomatoes from Crossroad Farm
Bread from Colatina bakery, Bradford.
Butter from Cabot, Cabot, duh.
Ice Cream from Strafford Organic Creamery, Strafford.
Blueberries from Green Mountain Orchards, Putney.
Maple Syrup from Harold Carleton, Newbury.
Milk from Monument Farms Dairy, Middlebury

Here's a map
