Dirt - it is not often that we are humbled by a lowly gummi product, but it happened to me this evening. By spooning chocolate pudding into a cup, covering it with crushed Oreos and inserting a gummi worm into the 'dirt', the kitchen staff received one of its loudest ovations of the summer. It is with the utmost sincerity, on this the eve of our anniversary, that I say, "you were right, Marianne."

Sandwiches - crazy story:
A relay switch on the walk-in fridge failed this morning so we were forced to keep the door closed until the repairman showed. While he was working on it we had to come up with an alternative lunch that didn't involve anything from the walk-in. Tuna salad and PB & J was the answer but it required a separate table outside for kids allergic to one or both. I also needed to go get a turkey breast at a neighboring camp to serve the allergy kids. Then there was the need for vegetables. Luckily Crossroad's obliged my last minute plea for lettuce, tomatoes and carrots. Apples rounded out the plate because they had arrived in the midst of the chaos and they go well with peanut butter anyway.

International Night 2010

In our continuing effort to outdo ourselves and take things up one more level, we created the following meal completely from scratch. In addition to the menu, the tables were set with real china and glassware and flowers from Crossroad's. The most amazing part of the evening, however, was that the campers didn't want to leave the dining hall, even after two and a half hours; it was certainly a first for me in my 25 years at Camp Billings.

Many thanks to the regular kitchen staff: Stephanie, Kim, Cynthia, Alp, Joseph, Robert and Marcin, as well as Zoe Sirjane, a student at the Culinary Institute of America who, with her mom Penny, prepared the mille feuille, and Max O-C who manned the grill.

Menu

Pork and Cabbage eggrolls
Cream of Broccoli soup with baguette and VT butter
Crossroad's Lazy Lettuce with maple balsamic vinaigrette
Grilled chicken skewers with rice pilaf
Mediterranean salad plate: tabbouleah, baba ghanoush, hummus, feta, mixed olives, carrot salad, tzatziki, yogurt, roasted red peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes
Mille feuille with raspberries and blueberries

(The soup was that good)

A quick note on repeats: We do our best to spread things out and bring in new things, but some meals are so popular that kids expect them at least once a session. While things might start to get a little redundant for you the audience, the kids are pretty psyched to eat this stuff.
